5 of 5 starsReviewed 1 week ago This was probably our most relaxing holiday ever that has left us with some perfect memories of happy, family time. The hotel is just lovely, accessed by a 3km long part gravel driveway, very rural with gorgeous views across the mountains, comfortable beds, perfect hosts and delightful home cooked food. Our days consisted of relaxing breakfasts served by Derek, some low key activities such as kayaking, horse riding, swimming in the lakes, walking along the rivers, and returning back to Ilaria\\\'s delicious home cooked meals in the evening. Our 8 year old daughter loved collecting freshly laid eggs, walking Lola the big, fat friendly family dog, and playing with Cloudy the cat who was also known to join us on an evening stroll along the track. Derek and Ilaria had some great suggestions of sensible walks and places to go for the day, all within around a 20-40min drive. The roads in the area are deserted so driving is totally stress free. Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful, especially for the activities such as Kayaking, and also ordering food and drink in the local bars as this is not a typical tourist area so very few people speak English. The horse riding was just amazing, the location and views awesome, a total must do even for a total novice like me. If you are looking for a hide away to spend quality time with your family, this is it.\r\n\r\nStayed May 2014, travelled with family\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n5 of 5 stars Location\r\n5 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service

5 of 5 starsReviewed 20 April 2014\r\nWe are just back from a wonderful week with Derek and Ilaria in their beautiful home/hotel. We slept well in a clean and comfortable family room, saw skies full of stars before we went to sleep, and awoke to a gentle chorus of bird song. Breakfast was served on the terrace (can be inside if you prefer, but we loved the 360 degree views of mountains, olive groves, and almond trees). We walked all around El Geco Verde, as well as doing one activity each day. All was very low key, but very efficient and everything that was organised for us by Ilaria just seemed to work. Kayaking, self guided walks, mountain biking, star gazing and horse riding. We loved being out and about during the day, and coming home to a freshly cleaned room and a delicious 3 course meal which never failed to satisfy. My daughter and I were enchanted by our early evening walks which were accompanied by birdsong and goat bells sounding. We felt totally comfortable as soon as we arrived and this feeling of absolute peace stayed with us for the week. The other guests were also lovely, which added to our holiday experience. Our children spent a large part of our drive back to Alicante working out how soon we can come again. Just lovely and we can\\\'t wait to go back.\r\n\r\nRoom Tip: We had the family room on the ground floor which we liked since we used to sit and read on the bench...\r\nSee more room tips\r\nStayed April 2014, travelled with family\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n5 of 5 stars Location\r\n5 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service

5 of 5 starsReviewed 19 March 2014\r\nMade to feel very welcome by Derek and Ilaria in their lovely home/hotel. You are in the middle of nowhere, with no noise, no traffic, only olive groves, almonds and the birds. This is a good place to escape from everything for a few days. It is about half an hours drive from the Natural Park where you can do some spectacular mountain walks amongst the cliffs and crags with vultures and eagles overhead. The nearby small town of Castril has an interesting situation with a fast flowing river and high castle on a rocky crag. It is a very unspoiled area with very few foreign tourists. Their website is very informative and tells you all you need to know.\r\n\r\nRoom Tip: All of the rooms are very spacious and comfortable.\r\nSee more room tips\r\nStayed March 2014, travelled as a couple\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n4 of 5 stars Location\r\n5 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service

5 of 5 starsReviewed 29 November 2013\r\nI could reiterate what many other reviewers have said about the excellence of the hospitality, the location, the food, the comfort at El Geco Verde, but instead I\\\'ll write about a typical day there in late November.\r\n\r\nEl Geco Verde is 900M above sea level so it\\\'s cold at this time of year and the olive and almond groves are white with frost and the mountains are tinged pink with the morning light. In the dining room, the stove is lit, and breakfast of cereal, juice, coffee and toast with Sierra Nevada honey and delicious jam is served. It\\\'s time to decide how to spend the day, and with the help of Ilaria and Derek, who have a vast knowledge of the countryside, towns and villages, local bars and restaurants, we choose a walk in the Sierra de Castril. They provide us with detailed directions to the starting point deep in the National Park, and for the walk itself. Highlights are the source of the river where water gushes out of the rocks, steps cut into the side of a gorge rising to around 1500M for spectacular views of the countryside and a sprinkling of snow, and the descent via a stone path which zig-zags down to the valley. \r\n\r\nBack at El Geco Verde, the dogs are always happy to go out walking with guests, but unfortunately for us, Lola and Ernie are so popular that they are already out by the time we get back, so instead we have some time to relax before dinner.\r\n\r\nWe requested vegetarian food in advance, and Ilaria has prepared us a delicious three-course meal. If pressed to choose a favourite dish, I think it would have to be her pizza, or maybe the hot chocolate pudding oozing with rich dark sauce! The dining room and sitting room are heated by a double-sided wood-burning stove, so after dinner we move around to the fireside chairs. Then finally before bedtime on a clear night you really have to wrap up warm and spend some time on the terrace looking up at the sky. There\\\'s no light pollution, so you see stars like you\\\'ve never seen them before - it\\\'s magical!\r\n\r\nTo sum up the experience of a stay at El Geco Verde: the house is beautiful - it was refurbished and extended in the last few years but feels very traditional; renewable energy is used so the impact of your holiday on the environment is minimal; the location is away from it all, but doesn\\\'t feel remote as it\\\'s only 4km on a good track from the main road; there are lots of places to see and things to do in the area; the food is fantastic with a completely different menu served on each of our three nights. But what we appreciated most were the hosts who make the place so special. Ilaria and Derek are extremely attentive and do everything they can to make sure you get the very best out of your stay. \r\n\r\nAnd did we feel at home? Well, I think the fact that we went to dinner in our slippers says it all!\r\n\r\nStayed November 2013, travelled as a couple\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n5 of 5 stars Location\r\n4 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service

5 of 5 starsReviewed 29 July 2013\r\nWe spent a week here in July and couldn\\\'t have been happier with our choice. As so many people have said in other reviews, Ilaria and Des are fantastic hosts who make you feel welcome and at home from the moment you arrive.\r\n\r\nThe hotel is tucked away in the middle of olive and almond groves about 4 - 5 miles outside of Castril. We ate every evening on the terrace and the food was simple, authentic and delicious. The menu was fixed, but I\\\'m sure if there was something we didn\\\'t want then they could have accomodated us - never needed to investigate that option though!\r\n\r\nwhile we were there we did stargazing (at the hotel), kayaking, horse riding and walking. the first three were all organised by Ilaria for us, and Des gave us excellent directions and instructions for the walks. We also spent a lot of time at the big public pool in Castril (which cost about 3 euros a day for an adult). Really nice pool, good size and impeccably kept, small bar/restaurant on site for drinks and lunch.\r\n\r\nThere\\\'s a nice sitting room in the hotel which was always cool and was a good place to crash out having returned from a busy day doing stuff. There\\\'s an honesty bar for drinks, and a facility where you can make teas/coffees whenever you want them. The scenery around Castril is beautiful and El Geco Verde is the perfect base from which to explore it.\r\n\r\nStayed July 2013, travelled with family\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n5 of 5 stars Location\r\n5 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service

It really is in the middle of nowhere but there is a well stocked library with books and DVDs and wifi so you aren\\\'t totally cut off. Illaria is a great cook and both her and Derek and their lovely sons made us feel so welcome. We did lots of activities with our 9 year old son - horse riding, star gazing, kayaking and lots of swimming in the great big pool in Castril. The pool at the hotel was also great for a quick dip - we went at the end of July so this was very necessary! I loved the terrace which had amazing views and appreciated the efforts that went into making the hotel as eco friendly as possible - recycling, solar panels, mainly locally sourced food and drink. The hotel was a great size for us so you could be sociable if you wanted to be. All in all - we wish you all the best - thank you for a great holiday!\r\n\r\nRoom Tip: Be aware there are no fans but there are mosquito nets on the windows so you can let the breeze come...\r\nSee more room tips\r\nStayed July 2013, travelled with family\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n5 of 5 stars Location\r\n5 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service

5 of 5 starsReviewed 26 July 2013\r\nAs previous reviewers have noted, El Geco Verde\\\'s lovely hosts make every effort to make sure their guests feel at home. The hotel is a long way off the main road - 5 km or so, but the track is in good condition (provided you follow the directions provided and not your sat nav). Sitting atop a rise the views all around are of olive and almond groves, wheat fields, wooded hills and distant mountains. The sky is full of birds during the day and stars at night.\r\n\r\nIlaria provides home made meals in the evening which are tasty, varied and very good value. Our family of five enjoyed them all. Favorites were the stuffed courgette flowers, gaspacho, home-made burgers and various pastries. I have to eat gluten-free and Ilaria catered for me very well indeed. \r\n\r\nDerek and Ilaria can arrange activities such as horse-riding, canoeing and canyoning for you, which is good if, like us, you have no Spanish. The canyoning was great fun but much more strenuous than I had bargained for. The horse riding is through terrain that makes you feel like you are in a western! The canoeing is very enjoyable, on a bright blue lake only 20 minutes away,\r\n\r\nWe took a day-trip to Granada. It took us about 2 hours to drive there. Well worth the effort. I was expecting the Alhambra to be fab and it was. You can book evening tours in advance - this would be a good idea in high summer. \r\n\r\nThank you El Geco for a great holiday!\r\n\r\nRoom Tip: Room 6 has windows on both sides and is very airy. 5 of 5 starsReviewed 9 April 2013\r\nIn all the years we have been travelling we have never gone anywhere a second time. We have been to lovely places and stayed in amazing accomodation but travel time is precious so we have never revisited.....Until we went to el geco verde for the second time in 8 months. And it really was as fantastic the second time round. The area is simply magical and Derek and Ilaria make you feel so welcome that it recharges the batteries like no where else we have ever found. Having been in high summer it was interesting to see what Spring in Castril is like - differently beautiful is the answer...green, lush, spring flowers everywhere. The weather wasn\\\'t glorious but that didn\\\'t matter - we had some lovely walks and hikes, saw awesome waterfalls, full of melt water and the results of a lot of rain this winter, and as ever the kids went native around the olive groves and rocky hill sides. As a keen amateur photographer I was in absolute heaven - landscapes and wildlife galore, sunsets to make your jaw drop and amazing light. Ilaria went more than the extra mile enabling me to create a birthday cake -( a geco verde - what else?!) for my 9 year old sons birthday, and then provided an impromptu real Italian pizza class for the children which went down extremely well as a birthday treat. When asked how he wanted to spend his birthday my son said \\\'hanging round here having more awesome adventures\\\'... Nuff said. The rooms are warm and comfortable no matter how chilly it gets at night, the food is still the very best of home cooking and we will indeed be going back again....\r\n\r\nRoom Tip: More than enough room for a family of 5 in either of the family rooms. 5 of 5 starsReviewed 5 September 2012\r\nWe stayed for 14 days, as part of a longer trip in Andalucia, starting in the tourist hell of malaga, and finishing with some culture in Granada. Having done a lot of travelling, El Geco Verde is one of the best places my husband and I have ever stayed - with or without kids. Repeating previous reviews, the owners are simply lovely - so helpful and welcoming. The food is indeed the best of home cooking and delicious. The scenery is glorious, the rooms are simply but beautifully furnished and very comfortable. The ability to have dinner cooked, or to use the smal communal kitchen offers flexibility to meet a family\\\'s needs as required. Superb value for money in an unspoilt area, with a wide range of locally run activities like canoeing, horseriding, walking and even professionally supported star gazing. Their local knowledge and contacts were invaluable and we enjoyed all the activities that they recommended. \r\n\r\nWe had a family room and there was plenty of space for the four of us. My husband and I stayed here for 3 glorious days in late July 2012. The hotel is in a superb location in the middle of the Andalucisa mountains. The property is surrounded by olive and almond groves, all of which can be wandered through and enjoyed. The beauty of El Geco Verde is the nature, views and sense of space. This was a real boost for us as we are used to urban living, so being able to see so many stars, such far distance and such a wonderful pallette of desert colours was a treat for the eyes.\r\n\r\nThe rooms are very spacious with large bathrooms. Ours had a small balcony and a semi-private staircase to the main dining room. The rooms have everything you need and would expect in such a location. The beds are comfortable, there is plenty of space for clothes, cases etc.. our room had a small TV which we never even switched on as the view outside was so amazing.\r\n\r\nThe owners of the hotel, Derek and Ilaria have 2 kids, dogs, rabbits, chickens and a vegie patch all of which add to the family feel of the hotel. It\\\'s like visiting your best friend\\\'s place which just happens to be a hotel! Ilaria is a fantastic cook making beautiful crepes and pumpkin flower dishes as well as pizza. Derek is a compendium of knowledge about the surrounding area and was very obliging showing us a few hiking trails and mountain streams.\r\n\r\nThis is a part of Spain that takes a little effort to get to however the rewards are incredible!\r\n\r\nOne point - be sure to follow the detailed directions that the owners provide to get to the hotel, a GPS will send you on an altogether longer route.\r\n\r\nStayed July 2012, travelled as a couple\r\n5 of 5 stars Value\r\n5 of 5 stars Location\r\n5 of 5 stars Sleep Quality\r\n5 of 5 stars Rooms\r\n5 of 5 stars Cleanliness\r\n5 of 5 stars Service
